Rafael Nadal pulls out of Davis Cup final with knee injury
World No.1 tennis player Rafael Nadal has pulled out of the Davis Cup final with a knee injury.
The 22 year old is suffering from knee tendonitis in his right knee and despite a week of treatment, he has been forced to withdraw from the final in Spain.
The injury was confirmed after testing and he will undergo further medical revision within a week.
Sanchez Vicario is most likely to take his place in the final at Mar del Plata between 21st and 23rd November against Argentina.
The new comes as a blow to Spain’s bid for a third Davis Cup title since 2000. Nadal was a key player when Spain beat the US 4-1 in the semi finals, winning both of his single matches.
He won his fourth straight French Open and first Wimbledon title this year, beating Roger Federer to become World No.1.
Nadal also withdrew from the Paris Masters last month with an injury to the same knee after losing the first set of his quarter final against Nikolai Davydenko.
He was also absent from this week’s season ending Masters Cup in Shanghai, China, and is unlikely to compete in the Malaga Masters between 5th and 7th December.
Knee Tendonitis
Symptoms of knee tendonitis
Your patient may feel pain just below the knee cap and the pain may increase when the knee is straightened when using the patella tendon. There may be puffiness over the site of pain when this knee injury occurs.
Causes of knee tendonitis
The patella tendon works whenever the knee bends and straightens under load, e.g. under your body weight and gravity. It can be injured through too high a load being put on it like kicking a ball, jumping, or squat exercises in weight lifting. Activities, such as long distance running, hopping and bounding, can also be a factor.
Treatment for knee tendonitis
Upon injury or flare up, applying cold therapy treatment, such as the Vulkan Instant Ice Pack, will reduce swelling and relieve discomfort. Upon return to training, advise your patient to wear a knee support. We recommend the Vulkan Knee Wrap, Vulkan AE Knee support and Vulkan Knee support.
